Castlemaine is a rural town around an hour from Melbourne along the Calder Highway. It is a vibrant town with restaurants, cafes, accommodation and even it’s own Movie Theatre. It is known as the hotrod capital of Australia and is home to the Castlemaine Gaol.
Castlemaine offers a vibrant country town with every modern convenience. The town maintains its beautiful heritage buildings while offering a contemporary lifestyle with movies, theatres, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and shops galore.
The Castlemaine Gaol is now a venue for visitors offering food, accommodation, conferencing and even weddings.
Antique shopping, old books, those hard to find missing bits from your heritage home – they’re all here. The surrounding countryside offers undulating farms for those wanting a drive with picturesque landscapes. Whether staying for a week or just venturing out for the day Castlemaine should be on your must visit list.
Castlemaine is one of those few places that has tastefully retained the look of the town. The IGA supermarket was incorporated into the original building, and the Castlemaine Visitor Centre and the Empyre Hotel have retained the original look. Even some of the new buildings look like they were built a hundred years ago. This is a great time of year to explore historical Castlemaine and all it has to offer.
I always enjoy stopping at Castlemaine. The town is full of specialty shops and cafes that will keep you entertained for hours. One of my favorite coffee haunts is the Empire with its wide verandah to dine without the sun melting you away. Inside comfortable leather chairs envelop you as you read the news while sipping on a latte or cappuccino.
